The King and I

Lunch on Tuesdays in Savannah can be hard. It has been two plus years of the pandemic and it is hard to know if a restaurant will be open on Tuesdays. The first and second places that Joa and I went to were closed. The third time was the charm, and we ate at The King and I. The King and I is a Thai restaurant on Hodgson Memorial Drive. It is located in a shopping center that has a Mexican restaurant, a Halal market and Lulu’s desserts. When I soft shell crab on the menu, I had to get it. Soft shell crab is now in season and it is traditionally marked by the first full moon in May and runs through September.

David and Cat, my best friends in Brooklyn, love soft shell crabs. They typically get fresh crabs from Red Hook Lobster Pound and cook them at home with pasta. The dish I ordered at The King and I was equally delicious. I have never had crab with a yellow curry sauce, and it was a buttery delight.

Joa ordered the drunken noodles and they looked good. I am allergic to peanuts, and Joa is allergic to shellfish. We didn’t share our plates. The service was great and the place is affordable. Afterwards, we went to Lulu’s and bought $7 slices of pie. The pie was good, but it’s a splurge at seven whole bucks.

Pupusas

My friends and I are trying to eat at different places for lunch in Savannah. In particular, we want to eat more than American cuisine. Tacos are not the only Latin American cuisine in Savannah. Joa suggested a Pupuseria in Garden City. So, I went to Google Maps on my phone and I saw that there are two pupuserias in Garden City. What is a pupuseria? A pupuseria is a restaurant that serves pupusas. Pupusas are either Salvadoran or Honduran and they are similar to Arepas. Joa and I went to Pupuseria Jireh for lunch, and it was amazing. I ordered tamales, pupusas and plantains (maduros). The local paper wrote about this place last year. Coincidentally, there was a Pupusa Fest in Los Angeles two weeks ago. I only heard about it because my friend Alexis posted about it on Instagram. The Los Angeles Times just wrote about how this Salvadoran dish is growing in popularity.

Lunch: Pimento Cheese And Pig Sandwich

At Back In The Day Bakery on Bull Street, in addition to cookies, brownies and cupcakes, they serve delicious sandwiches for lunch. One of these is the pig and pimento cheese sandwich. Pimento cheese is trending as a condiment. I have seen pimento cheese on the menu as a spread for hamburgers, sandwiches or a dip for French fries. Pimento cheese is pretty easy to make at home.  I made it once, and it was delicious. However, it’s the kind of dish that you make to share with people either for a party or a dinner. Most recipes call for cheddar cheese, but I am sure you could substitute other cheeses like Manchego or Gruyere. There’s even a pimento cheese cookbook, Pimento Cheese The Cookbook: 50 Recipes from Snacks to Main Dishes Inspired by the Classic Southern Favorite.
